Taxi, Limo, and Black Car Insurance in New York

Operating a livery vehicle in the state of New York, no matter if it's a taxi, black car or limousine, comes with the requirement to carry for-hire insurance. The only exceptions to the rule are for buses and ambulances. If you accept payment for transporting someone in your car, you have to have for-hire insurance. At Edouard Insurance Agency Inc in Spring Valley, NY, we're familiar with the state laws and the kind of insurance you need to operate your livery vehicle on the public roadway.

New York State is a Mandatory Insurance State for Livery Vehicles

If you're operating a vehicle-for-hire, you must have a type of insurance policy known as for-hire vehicle insurance. This is true for people who own or lease a vehicle that's used for the purpose of transporting passengers. A for-hire policy lasts for one year and cannot be allowed to lapse during that year. If the insurance policy lapses, the insurer notifies the state through the Insurance Information & Enforcement System's electronic reporting system.

For-Hire Insurance Minimum and Maximum Liability Amounts

New York state requires vehicles used in the business of transporting not more than seven passengers carry an insurance policy with the following clauses:

  • $25,000 minimum and $50,000 maximum for bodily injury
  • $50,000 minimum and a maximum of $100,000 for death
  • $10,000 minimum for injury or destruction to property

Vehicles that carry eight or more passengers are required to carry a policy that has a combined single limit of $1,500,000 for bodily injury or death to one or more people and injury to or destruction of property in a single accident.
